“There will be no carbon tax under the government that I lead”. These are the words that will haunt Prime Minister Julia Gillard for the rest of her political life. At first she denied she’d spoken them, claimed they were irrelevant. We all remember the interview with Alan Jones immediately after the announcement, the one that infuriated both sides of politics. Then came the confession that she had done a backflip but she retained the arrogant assertion that she had a mandate for introducing this economic cyanide pill. Uh, no you didn’t even campaign on global warming and you knew if you mentioned another tax, Abbot’s hopelessly repetitive slogan (although not as cringeworthy as “moving forward”) would have won him the election. Not to mention the fact that she talked Rudd off the scheme.
Then came the lie after lie trying to sell this tax.
Not implementing a carbon tax will hurt our economy long term. No, it will put our industry at a competitive disadvantage, costing jobs.
Gillard asserts that we are not going in it alone as China is doing its part as well as Europe and 10 US states. The US states in question are in fact starting to one by one dump their cap and trade schemes, Europe’s is failing and although China is shutting down old coal-fired power plants, they are being replaced at a greater rate.
Europe’s system has created jobs she says (Bob Brown is also guilty of this grossly misleading remark). Yeah, but lost more than were gained. Isn’t it the net change in jobs figures that count, or maybe she disregards those in “unclean” industries who are poisoning the planet. She then goes on to talk anout reskilling those who do lose their jobs so they can join the green sector. That is an admission that they will lose their jobs anyway.
Greg Combet claims that it is 100% certain that man is heating the world catastrophically. No, lets disregard the work of well regarded skeptics like Richard Lindzen, John Christy, Roy Spencer, Piers Corbyn and Fred Singer and instead take that of Will Steffen on the basis of his 18 page and seriously flawed powerpoint presentation to the government.
Combet also boasted that 50% of revenue raised will go helping low to middle income households. Australians aren’t stupid. We can work out that not all families will be compensated with not all of the money. We know that $599m will have to go to the United Nations for one thing. Combet then thinks that Abbot wouldn’t dare roll it back with it benefitting so many people; well we don’t need compensation if we don’t have a tax. Yeah, Australians can work that out too.
Then Julia Gillard wants to prove she’s tough after everyone realises the greens are running the government, so she declares war on shock jocks like Andrew Bolt, Alan Jones and Piers Ackerman who are going around telling “lies” like climate change is not real. How arrogant and insulting the is assertion that rational skeptics such as myself cannot make up our own mind after hearing the argument from alarmists and “shock jocks” alike without our minds being poisoned.
Another gross government deceit, this one seldom picked up on in the media, are the terms “carbon tax” and “carbon pollution”. Carbon makes people think of black, sooty stuff rather than the real climate villain in question, carbon dioxide. The term pollution is also a lie. Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant, it is in fact beneficial to life on earth through its role in the carbon cycle and the processes of photosynthesis and respiration.
Gillard is kidding if she thinks that this tax will have any effect on the world’s temperatures. Even if it achieves our goal of reducing our emissions by 5% of our 2000 level, this will achieve very little in terms of CO2 concentration (we contribute 1.5% of total global emissions which also makes it misleading to cite our per capita emissions as areason for a lead role in this saga) and even less in terms of temperature and even less if you don’t base this on science which factors in high climate sensitivity to CO2.
It is a regime of spin and deceit that we have had to endure since Rudd and I am sick of it. Australia is sick of it. We want a government that will not mislead us to promote their own agenda and to save their own skins, too afraid to admit it was wrong. How about a government that will not treat us like we are a bunch of idiots with their shameful arrogance and lies.
