Man powerless against might of nature

Greenies love the environment. There’s no doubt about that. Having said that, they seem to have a low opinion of mother nature. The very assertion that humankind can alter the climate, implies that nature is at our mercy.

When you look at the natural disasters (the key word here is natural) over the past six months, it is really the other way around. Floods, earthquakes, tsunamis and cyclones. We’ve seen them all and the loss of life and destruction caused is beyond belief. That is the power of mother nature. When she wants to turn it on, there really is nothing we can do to stop her.

History is full of cases where the climate proved too much for some of the greatest civilisations on earth. When nature decided to dry up the Nile, the greatest civilisation of the day, Egypt, fell. The same drought brought an end to the Akkadian empire. In 1200 BC, changing rainfall patterns devastated Greek society. Natural climate changes were a contributing factor to the end of the great Roman Empire.

Yes, we do affect the environment with deforestation and pollution (not carbon dioxide), but as we became more conscious of this, these impacts lessened. We do not however have any significant effect on the planet at the climatic level. Perhaps one day our technology can reach the point where we can thwart an ice age, but for now, mankind must concede our inferiority to mother nature.

About Climate Nonconformist

Hi, I'm the climatenonconformist (not my real name), and I am a global warming skeptic, among the few in generation Y. With Australia facing the prospect of a carbon tax, we need to be asking the simple question; where is the evidence that our emissions are causing any dangerous warming?
