This man is dangerous. Bob Brown already has too much power in this country, and now he is seeking to abuse that to meet his political ends. In light of the News of the World scandal, this selfish opportunist has called for an inquiry into news ownership and editorial content.
A long time paranoid Murdoch media-conspiracy theorist, Brown’s suggestion is dangerous for free speech in this country. It is a step down a path of regulation, censorship and oppression that we as Australians cannot condone. Attacking free speech impairs a clear and free debate, without which we cannot have a true democracy. In his crusade against the ooga-booga Murdoch press, Brown has attacked a cornerstone of our democratic society. His call is unAustralian. What is scarier however, is that Julia Gillard has entertained the request.
“I anticipate we’ll have a discussion amongst parliamentarians about this, about the best review and the best way of dealing with all of this”
Given the sway Brown holds over her, this campaign from Brown may accumulate some weight behind it. What I am curious over, is how much is the government already interfering in the media?
This is not a left vs. right issue. Free speech affects us all and every journalist in this country, whether they are a fan of Brown or not, should condemn this assault on democracy. Here is Paul Murray’s take on the issue.
