We all know that Labor is desperate. They hold the slimmest of minorities and are having the roughest of times in the polls, mostly because of the carbon dioxide tax. This desperation is evident in their handling of the whole Craig Thomson situation.
Earlier in the week, The Australian reported on how labor MPs are being coached to praise Thomson, something which may come back to bite them. They’re also being told to deflect attention from their own party.
“Can I remind the Leader of the Opposition there is only one member of the federal Parliament who has been charged with a criminal offence?”
It’s a pathetic tactic, considering the difference in severity of the alleged crimes, and the fact that it doesn’t discount the possibility that one may become two in the foreseeable future. What it does do effectively is demonstrate their need to attack the opposition, rather than confronting the issue head on. The leaked documents also advise ministers to label Abbott’s remarks on the matter as the “grubby politics with a huge splash of hypocrisy”.
The Age has reported on another example of labor going on the attack over the allegations surrounding Thomson, with labor figures looking to “punish” the HSU for taking the matter to the police. How very un-labor, looking to bully one of the smallest unions for ensuring their members hard-earned isn’t abused in the manner alleged. Then of course, there’s the shovel incident, a disturbing continuation of this saga.
If Thomson were to resign, this government would face a swift and well-deserved end. It is not surprising that they would seek to aggressively defend Thomson in the manner they have. While it says nothing of Thomson’s guilt, it does highlight the desperation of these fools to cling to power.
