The folly of calling carbon dioxide “carbon”

The Age reports on the government’s plan to close coal-fired power plants, and makes the typical warmist mistake.

The removal of the dirtiest power generation in the country is part of the government’s Clean Energy Future plan, which also includes a $23/tonne price on carbon from July 2012, household assistance and funding for renewable energy projects.

In a tonne of carbon, there are four times as many molecules as in a tonne of carbon dioxide. What are they taxing? Maybe I’m being too technical, but the distinction is important.

About Climate Nonconformist

Hi, I'm the climatenonconformist (not my real name), and I am a global warming skeptic, among the few in generation Y. With Australia facing the prospect of a carbon tax, we need to be asking the simple question; where is the evidence that our emissions are causing any dangerous warming?

  1. Chilli says:

This is what happens when propaganda meets scientific fact. The only reason alarmists call CO2 ‘carbon’ is to create a bogus association with smoke, soot and smog in the public’s mind. This links into the whole idea of ‘a tax on pollution’. Who could possibly argue against a tax on pollution? Who’s for more pollution? No-one. But a tax on CO2 – an essential plant food, a harmless natural trace gas we all exhale. That’s a tough sell – and the alarmists know it.

  2. The bubbles in beer and champagne are 899 999ppm CO2. You put yeast, to make the bread spongy. Those bubbles in bread are over 800999ppm CO2. Human body is made 25% of carbon

To sequestrate one ton of carbon: ratio in the molecule is two to one. For every carbon atom, two oxygen atoms are decommissioned of doing their job. Needs 80m3 of oxygen at sea-level for 1kg. 21% is oxygen in the air. To bury one ton of carbon = depleting .air to zero oxygen on how many cubic meters? Oxygen is the best insulator – less oxygen – stratosphere closer = more extreme climate. Preventing methane creation is the biggest depleting of oxygen.

I strongly suggest to all of you Skeptics: get your head from the clouds, read the page on methane on my website – will knock your socks off.
