Along with the polar bear, the Maldives are a favourite poster child for the climate activists. Their president Mohamed Nasheed is seen with Julia Gillard at CHOGM.
LARGE Commonwealth countries such as Australia have been warned to prepare for an influx of climate-change refugees as rising sea levels cause small nations to disappear.
Caribbean diplomat Sir Ronald Sanders, a member of the Eminent Persons Group, said he was upset leaders were not urgently working on a plan for the “very serious and grave issue” of climate change, which threatened the existence of small countries in the Pacific and the Caribbean.
“Not only will some of them physically disappear, but in others there will be such severe dislocation of populations that will have to be shifted and shifted to God knows where because nobody has made any plans about what to do if such a tragedy occurs,” he said.
“I think that large countries of the Commonwealth better be prepared for an influx of refugees who will have no choice – either live on a boat on the ocean or find a refugee on somebody else’s shores.”
Would these be the same 50 million climate refugees who were predicted by 2010? Would they be the same ones who Al Gore proclaimed in his dud movie to have already evacuated to New Zealand?
Despite all the carbon dioxide we’ve been spewing into the atmosphere, sea level rise appears to be decelerating. Someone should tell some of these CHOGM delegates that, but I doubt they would want to hear it.
